Renewable Portfolio Standards

Market Overview

To date, as many as 23 States have set mandatory renewable portfolio standards (RPS) or some form of non-mandated renewable energy goal. Many States allow affected sources to meet their RPS compliance requirements by purchasing renewable energy credits (RECs). In most cases, a REC represents the environmental attributes of 1 MWh of renewable energy generated by a particular source. State RPS rules and goals are diverse and can differ significantly from State to State.
